<description>Recently, Facing Forward provided simulated homeless experiences for two Chicago area youth groups. The groups from Fourth Presbyterian Church (February 17th) and Temple Jeremiah (February 26th) participated in “A day in the life of…”, an interactive experience designed to educate youth and adults about the difficulty in obtaining housing and stability after becoming homeless. Facing Forward staff and volunteers design a mini city with a number of the places that homeless individuals and families will encounter in their attempts to get off the streets including: emergency shelters, schools, employment offices, a number of government agencies and even jail. Children are then provided cards describing how and why the individuals and families may have become homeless. They then follow the scenarios on their individual cards trying to locate the correct agencies and offices where they can obtain shelter, employment and the necessary documents to reach the ultimate goal of obtaining permanent housing. The experience simulates, in a very small way, what it might be like for a homeless person to navigate the system in order to leave a shelter and reach a stable living environment.

&#60;img src="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/2/83014/2492777/Temple2.jpg" width="670" height="500" width_o="2048" height_o="1531" src_o="http://payload9.cargocollective.com/1/2/83014/2492777/Temple2_o.jpg" data-mid="14852828"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

After the experience, Facing Forward staff provide facts about homelessness, ask the children questions about what they learned and answer any questions they may have. The end result illustrates that there are numerous factors that lead people to become homeless including illness, loss of employment and foreclosure, and that securing housing once a person becomes homeless can be a frustrating and extremely difficult endeavor.

Facing Forward relies on support from our donors to be able to provide these interactive educational opportunities. If you would like to support our educational programs please click the link below. Thank you for your support.

<description>Facing Forward to House an Additional 15 Families

Facing Forward is very excited to announce that we have been awarded a grant to fund an additional 15 homeless families in Chicago. The grant was received through a competitive application process.

This is a significant award for us and we are looking forward to expanding our program to serve these additional families. We expect this to begin in the September – October timeframe and we will then have to add an additional case manager.

The grant will require us to raise additional funds to fully fund the additional work and to provide the necessary “match” that the grant requires. Once fully implemented, Facing Forward will have a total of 63 single women and 50 families in our Housing First program.

Sanctuary Place Party
Some of the women at Sanctuary Place hosted a party Friday, April 6th where children had lunch, played games and colored Easter eggs. The event was organized by the women and a great time was had by everyone.

Volunteer
Many volunteer opportunities are available. Please contact Chad Deininger, Director of Development at (773) 265-1207 or chad@ffchicago.org to learn more or download this form.

Adopt-a-Family
You can directly make a difference in the life of a homeless family. It costs only an estimated $12,000 a year to provide a family of four with a permanent home and the tools they need to rebuild their lives. This compares to more than $20,000 to place a family of three in an emergency shelter and more than $30,000 to incarcerate a single woman in an Illinois jail. If you are interested in sponsoring a family, at either the full or partial amount, please contact Bill at (773) 265.1207. You can also involve your faith community, social club, co-workers or neighbors!

		<description>Facing Forward Programs

Sanctuary Place
Sanctuary Place is located on the west side of Chicago and houses Facing Forward’s main offices. It is a campus environment providing homes to 63 single women in studio apartments and 6 families in town homes. The residents create a supportive community that provides peer support in addition to the on-site case management team.

Shelter Graduates
Shelter Graduates offers case management and affordable housing to 29 families in scattered site apartments primarily in the west and south sides of Chicago. This project has recently expanded from 21 families.

Adopt-a-Family
The Adopt-a-Family program partners with faith communities to sponsor families in need throughout Chicagoland. By leveraging resources, 20 faith communities are currently helping 6 families. In addition to rental support, faith communities also assist with utility payments, clothing, household goods and other needs.

<description>Tomika: From homeless to future Air Force cadet

For Tomika, a second chance began with a dream.

“I picked the Air Force Academy Preparatory School because I wanted to do something different and special with my life after we were able to become residents through Facing Forward. I felt like I had another chance to really get a good education.”

Tomika is a 16-year-old and sophomre at the AFA Prep School. She has two younger brothers, Derell who is in 9th grade Curie and is on the school football team and another brother who is in 5th grade. Tomika’s mother Angela and her family have been residents at Sanctuary Place for three years, and the stability and security that a permanent home provides is enabling Tomika and her brothers to realize their dreams.

“The people at Facing Forward helped me to gain the confidence I needed to get a spot in the Academy. It was a competitive process, and I earned my appointment. The Academy has taught me discipline, peaceful conflict resolution and relationship building. Each student is given a lot of responsibility, and I enjoy the challenge.”

Education and a secure place for children to learn and grow are cornerstones of Facing Forward to End Homelessness’s mission. This past year:

* 96% of our children are currently enrolled in and attending school
* 12 of our young adults are currently enrolled in and attending college
* 93% of our residents have been in permanent housing for at least one year

These statistics are indicative of the success that Facing Forward has earned through years of experience and the development of best practices.

As Tomika continues with her studies, she is meeting wonderful people, aspires to play the violin and fully intends to apply for an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

One of the hidden tragedies of homelessness is that families move from shelter to shelter with their children constantly changing schools. Facing Forward to End Homelessness breaks the cycle of homelessness by creating a stable family environment where both individuals and families can thrive.

A place where change is possible
Facing Forward residents are determined women who, finding themselves homeless and broken, made the decision to face forward and move down a new path.

By surrounding these women with a framework of support and holding them accountable for their progress, Facing Forward gives them the best chance for a new life.

We foster an atmosphere of achievement where goals are set, met and celebrated. By providing permanent housing and a full array of services, including case management, healthcare, referrals for substance abuse treatment, mental health issues, education and job training, we give Chicago's homeless individuals and children the tools they need to reclaim their lives.

Be a part of change
We have a proven track record of success. Eighty-four percent of Facing Forward alumnae families are self-sufficient and paying full market rent. And seventy-five percent of Facing Forward children are currently working at grade level and twelve percent are on the honor roll.

Your support helps Chicago’s homeless women and children reclaim their lives. Join us in breaking the generational cycle of homelessness by transforming the lives of those in need.
